Family Reunion in Daytona Beach

A Family Reunion in Daytona Beach

Dear Friends & Fellow Travelers,

This issue of TraveLiving was written in Daytona Beach, Seattle, & Los Angeles... Yes, we are back in the States and off to a fast start!

Wow! What a whirlwind of a month August was! It's started the morning we had planned to leave Bocas del Toro, Panama when Jon-Jon fell out of the kids clubhouse and cracked his wrist. Luckily we were able to secure him a waterproof cast in San Jose, Costa Rica for our planned trip to Daytona Beach the next day.

After swimming and relaxing with Chris & Calvin (our two eldest boys) and Kathryn's mother for more than a week, the younger boys and I headed to Seattle to meet Kathryn for yet another week of work and play. And then this past weekend Kathryn filled rooms at Agape in Los Angeles for her workshops on love and relationships. In a few days we're headed to Monterey to visit Calvin in college.

We're really doing it! We're living the Portable Life. And you can too. Read on for little Julian's take on traveling "For More than Half of One's Life" and an introduction to "Burning Man: Structured Freedom".

For More than Half of One's Life

Julian, International Traveler

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live a truly nomadic life where home is not a location, but a feeling?

Perhaps you noticed those friends and classmates who always seemed to be coming back from some exotic or faraway location, or maybe they just went camping every weekend. In my younger years, travel and vacations were something that happened only once, maybe twice a year. But we now have a seasoned traveler in our midst, someone who has been traveling for 2/3 of his life, and he's only 3 years old!

We just celebrated Julian's birthday this past weekend and he has really taught us a few things about being an International citizen. When Julian speaks of "home" he is referring to our immediate family and where we are currently staying. He never gets phased or upset when he wakes up in a new bed. Julian is and always will be of International consciousness. He is the ultimate Portable Lifestyler.

Money & Bundling

Have you ever noticed that you can't buy penny candy any more? It's simply impossible to get a small bite of candy. You have to buy a giant candy bar or large bag.

Nor can you go to the store to buy ONE scrunchy or small pack of gum. Bundling has taken over retail. They sell you more than you want to increase the amount of each sale.

You can use this concept in your own business (albeit in a less annoying way) by creating packages. If you have several products, offer them together at a discount.

Everyone loves a deal and bundling is a great way to up your sales while making customer happy they saved some money.

Burning Man 2007 Photoboof

Our thoughts go to Burning Man this time of year (it is happening right now in the Black Rock Desert of Northern Nevada) since it is the place where we met.

It is the ultimate expression of a Portable Lifestyle: a temporary community that is set up in detail, is beautiful, and which holds untold adventure. Many who have been refer to Black Rock City (affectionately known as The Playa) as home even though it only exists one week out of every year.

Our experiences at Burning Man may have seasoned us for this glorious life on the road. We look forward to returning "home" someday in the future.
